Finding joy in the ordinary – How God meets us in the every day moments.

July 13, 2026

It would be so easy for me to say that I don’t have time to sit down and write.

But trust me, all I have to do is look at my screen time and I realise

“Ohhh I’ve got plenty of time, alright!”

The truth is, we’ve all got time for the things that matter most to us.

What stops me most of the time isn’t a lack of time.

It’s the lies I choose to listen to.

That I’m not a real writer.

That my spelling isn’t good enough to be a blogger.

A dear friend recently messaged me and said,

“Shell, I don’t know if you know this, but towards the bottom of one of your blog posts, the word ‘beautiful’ is misspelled.”

Thank you Jesus for friendships where we can receive feedback without taking it personally.

But if I’m honest, my human nature immediately wants to open the door to insecurity.

The thoughts creep in…

“Maybe I’m not good enough.”

“Maybe unless I can write like a university lecturer, what’s the point?”

Yet despite those thoughts, I still feel the gentle nudge to write.

To share the moments that brought me joy today.

Because I think those moments are worth remembering.

Today’s Joy

Being on holiday and having absolutely no idea what day it is.

Heaven!

Watching a little boy, maybe seven years old, surf a wave so big he looked like an ant against the ocean.

Walking into my favourite café and ordering a chai with a dash of honey (of course).

Savouring every sip slowly while the winter sun warmed my face.

Sitting around my dining table with a beautiful sister in Christ, drinking tea, sharing stories, laughing, and praying for one another.

Calling my best friend for no other reason than to hear her voice.

Spending the afternoon in the kitchen making my favourite bliss balls.

Simple moments.

Ordinary moments.

But those are the moments that felt most alive today.

God’s Presence in the Ordinary

I think we often overlook the very places where God is moving because we’ve convinced ourselves that blessings have to be extraordinary.

We wait for the big miracle.

The breakthrough.

The answered prayer.

The life-changing moment.

Meanwhile, God’s been moving the whole time.

A slow morning.

A warm cup of tea.

A phone call with your best friend.

Laugh’s around the dinning table.

His peace that dwells within your heart when you slow down long enough to notice it.

None of these moments were extraordinary by the world’s standards.

Yet God’s hand was in every single one of them.

How often do we miss Him because we’ve stopped counting the ordinary as a blessing?

How often do we find ourselves saying,

“I just don’t feel like God has been moving in my life lately.”

When, in reality, He has been there all along.

Don’t Miss the Joy You’re Already Living

I don’t have a life-changing blog post for you today.

But I do have this reminder.

If the mundane isn’t enough for you, the extraordinary won’t be either.

You can spend your life chasing the next thing you believe will finally make you happy.

Or…

You can begin recognising that joy has been meeting you in small, ordinary moments all along.

His joy is available in your everyday life.

You don’t have to be travelling the world.

You don’t have to land your dream job.

You don’t have to become a better version of yourself before you experience His goodness.

His presence is with you now.

His joy is available now.

His peace is available now.

Take a moment today to notice the ordinary blessings surrounding you.

I think you’ll discover they’ve been there all along.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” — James 1:17

Big love,

Shell x
